LOCATION
Murter (North Dalmatia, Croatia) is an island located in Croatian region North Dalmatia. It is connected with mainland in Tisno with bridge. It has around 5000 inhabitants. Tourist destinations on island Murter are: Murter, Tisno, Betina and Jezera.
Murter is largest and oldest settlement on island Murter. It is located on north side of island Murter. It is known for olive growing and olive oil.
Tisno is located on east side of island Murter. It got name by tight pass between island Murter and mainland (only 6 m wide). It was first time mentioned in 1474. Tisno is developed on mainland too.
Betina is located on north side of island Murter. Betina`s port has a shape of mouth and by that it got its name. Old Celtic word beta means mouth. Betina is known for shipyard.
Jezera (Lakes) got name by large plashes. It is located on south-east side of island Murter.
Island Murter has beautiful sand and pebble beaches and bays. Inhabitants are directed to livestock farming, fishing, vine growing and tourism.
HISTORY
Murter was first time mentioned as Scardon. Many remains of Roman objects have been found near Betina and Murter. It was called Srimac in 1251. First settlements were Murter and Jezera.
In 1475. on island Murter walls and tower were built to protect island from attacks. Many inhabitants inhabitated island during the attacks of Turks. Island Murter is known for production of quality olive oil. First modern oil mill was built in 1910.

In municipality Tisno each year on 11th of November, tradition of baptising wine is kept. It is day of St. Martin.
On first Sunday in July it is day of the Lady of Tarca. On that day pilgrimage is kept, with boats to Kornati islands, to bay Tarac.
